New Permitting Process
A new permitting system was implemented on May 11, 2020, by the Land Development Office, Economic and Community Development Department, of the City of Chattanooga. The name of the new software is Viewpoint Cloud. To get started you will need to create a user account.

Board of Construction Appeals
The Board of Construction Appeals hears requests and renders decisions for variances to the Building, Residential, Electrical, Fire, Fuel Gas, Life Safety, Mechanical, Plumbing and Energy Codes.
Board of Sign Appeals
The Board of Sign Appeals was created by the City Council to render decisions regarding requests for variances and special event permits for signs located within the City.
Board of Zoning Appeals for Variances and Special Permits
If your project does not meet the zoning requirements, you may request a variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals. Submissions (applications, site plan, and payment) can be made through our Online Portal. The cost is $150.00. The following are checklists that should accompany the application submission.

Board of Electrical Examiners
Anyone wishing to engage in the electrical business in the city must be licensed by the city of Chattanooga. This includes installations of electrical wiring as well as any associated repairs or alterations. (See city code 1986, sec 14-31). The city council created a Board of Electrical Examiners to oversee the examination and/or licensing of contractor and journeyman electricians.
Board of Gas Fitters Examiners
Anyone wishing to engage in the gas piping business in the city must be licensed by the city of Chattanooga. This includes the installation of gas piping as well as any associated repairs or alterations. (See city code 19-1 thru 19-122). The city council created a Board of Gas Examiners to oversee the examination and/or licensing of master and journeyman gas fitters.
Board of Mechanical Examiners
Anyone wishing to engage in the mechanical business in the city must be licensed by the city of Chattanooga. This includes installation as well as any associated repairs or alterations. The city council created a Board of Mechanical Examiners for master and journeyman mechanical contractors.
Board of Plumbing Examiners
Anyone wishing to engage in the plumbing business in the city must be licensed by the city of Chattanooga. This includes the installation of plumbing as well as any associated repairs or alterations. The city council created a Board of Plumbing Examiners to oversee the examination and/or licensing of master and journeyman plumbers.
Chattanooga Historic Zoning Commission
The Chattanooga Historic Zoning Commission reviews applications for Certificates of Appropriateness or Certificates of Economic Hardship in regards to construction, alteration, removal, or demolition of structures or appurtenances within a local historic district. Form-Based Code Zoning Committee
The Form-Based Code Committee meets to review requests for Major Modifications being requested by applicants with projects in the Form-Based Zoning area. Please visit the Form-Based Zoning webpage for additional information as well as the application and checklists.

Inspection hours of operation are Monday through Friday (excluding Holidays), from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Permit payments are not accepted for processing after 3:30 p.m. We accept checks, money orders, and credit cards (Visa, Discover, American Express, and MasterCard Only). We do not accept cash.
