A class of 26 cadets have made it through our six-month long fire academy to become the newest members of the Chattanooga Fire Department! They successfully completed Emergency Medical Technician training and learned about all of the different aspects of the fire service, including how to fight different types of fire. They’ve also mastered a number of skills like hazardous materials operations, vehicle extrication, rope rescues, tactical ventilation, Rapid Intervention Team techniques (saving a fellow downed or injured firefighter) and Fire Ground Survival (saving themselves from a fire if they become trapped, disoriented, or separated from their crew). This class is a diverse group, composed of men and women eager to serve the citizens of Chattanooga and respond to emergencies. Welcome to the CFD family!

Fire Academy 2023

Two people were transported to the hospital following a plane crash Wednesday morning at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport. Fire companies responded to 1001 Airport Road just after 10 AM on 7/26/23 along with Chattanooga Police, Hamilton County EMS, and Airport Fire & Police. They found a single-engine aircraft that had crashed on the north end of the airport. Two passengers were removed from the plane by Airport Fire & Police. Chattanooga firefighters assisted airport first responders with preparing the patients for transport. They were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries by Hamilton County EMS. CFD personnel made sure there were no fuel leaks and secured the scene for airport authorities. Airport officials will make notifications to all of the proper agencies. The cause of the crash will be under investigation. Operations at the airport quickly returned to normal. We appreciate the airport’s leadership in conducting training events with public safety agencies so that the CFD and others are prepared to effectively respond to these kinds of emergency incidents.

The Chattanooga Fire Department worked a small chemical spill at the BASF facility on Polymer Drive. The call came out at 1:33PM on 7/21/23. Multiple Green Shift companies responded, along with our Special Operations Division and hazmat team. Firefighters worked with BASF officials on the scene to mitigate the incident. Everything was contained to the property and there were no injuries. Our mutual aid partners are provided coverage at our fire halls while our crews were on this scene. HCEMS and CPD assisted. Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue is provided rehab for first responders working in the heat. By 4:30 PM, the spill was completely contained. No hazards were involved. Thanks to BASF for always working closely with the CFD on training and communication so that everyone is prepared and equipped to respond.
