1885-1887 Alonzo Grant Sharpe

A G SHARP 1868-85-86Following his first term as Mayor in 1869, Alonzo Sharp served two terms as city recorder, one term as city attorney, and in 1873, became the U.S. Collector of Revenue in Chattanooga, a position he held for two years.  In 1878, United States Postmaster General and former Chattanoogan, David Key appointed Sharp as a postal inspector, assigning him to a district in California for four years.  In 1883, Sharp was offered the opportunity to return to Chattanooga as Chief Postal Inspector.  Sharp accepted the position and returned to the city, where after just two years back in Chattanooga, he again served as mayor.

In 1890, Sharp became Post Office Inspector General over a southern region including Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina.

Alonzo Sharpe died at the age of 73 while at his apartment in Atlanta, he was a special agent for American Bell Telephone.
